Don't Blame Us!

As farmers, sometimes it seems that we have everything going against us--growing food outdoors in the elements can be a huge gamble.

The spring can be too cold and/or too wet, so that we’re not able to get the ground ready for planting, much less get it planted. There’s the chance that it could be cold and wet all summer--that’s a bummer, because then we miss out on tomatoes, peppers, and melons.

If it’s too hot and dry in the summer, the lettuces and other greens stress-out and get bitter, and they can be attacked by aphids. Broccoli and cauliflower will flower early if they’re not given lots of water to keep them cool, and peas will shrivel up before our very eyes.

The key to success here is to try to be prepared for whatever the weather may bring--good or bad. That means that we plant lots of cabbages and broccoli (as an example) for harvest in July and August, in addition to the tomatoes and peppers. That way we know we’ll have lots of food that tastes good, no matter what. We plan for contingencies like this throughout the season.
