It all comes down to keeping the critters happy. Happy animals are healthy animals, and we do everything we can to keep them well-fed, sheltered from sun and rain, and spared from boredom. The only critters that cause us problems are the bored, unhappy ones: they escape their fences, eat things they should not, and get sick easily. Just like people.

Why Keep Livestock? There are lots of reasons to keep animals on the farm. They contribute fertility to our growing spaces, help us clean up our fallow (resting) spaces by digging up weeds and eating insect pests, and they provide entertainment and interest for we humans.
Aside from their practical uses, we just plain love having animals around. It doesn’t seem like a farm without them, and their daily needs give us a beginning and close to our days. Nutritionally, animal products are a great source of proteins and vitamins that are a little more work for our bodies to get from plants alone. We respect all the vegetarians and vegans out there who do meet their nutritional needs by consuming plants alone, but we sure do love our bacon and eggs!
